Advocacy of not phasing out jeepneys
Jeepney is the most common and unique public vehicle transportation here in the philippines but for many filipinos it is more than just a vehicle transportation, it has become part of the filipino cultures and history. Filipino love to take or commute with jeepney vehicles because it is one of the cheapest way to commuting with a minimum fare of 10 to 15 pesos per passenger.
Allow me to give you a small background of this public transportation, the jeepney.
Jeep is known for its low fare rates for commuters. It is the most popular public vehicle transportation in the philippines. Jeepney had started in the early 1950s after the World War II. It is a vehicle long enough to accomodate around 10 to 15 commuters. It also has decorations that attract the commuters and it plays musics.
Thus, no to jeepney phase out, we should protect our traditional jeepney transportation due to many reasons. It is the resourcefulness of many filipino drivers and operators. It is their only job and source of income to support and provide for the needs of their family and themselves. They are relying on this job, not just the drivers and operators but the students and citizen commuters. It is also a big help for those commuters especially to students and labors to be able to transport to their respective or desired place to commute and because of its low fare rates.
What are the possible things that might happen if the jeepneys are gone?
•Tons of jeepney drivers and operators will lost their only source of income. An estemation of more than 200,000 drivers depend on this job for their livelihood. It is their only way of supporting and providing the needs of their family. There are also jeepney drivers who have to support and provide for their children's tuition or projects at school. Also, it will be very difficult for them to afford the new modern transportation for it costs more than a million per unit.
•Students and commuters will struggle to adjust because there will be no jeepneys to commute because it has become part of their daily lives. They will pay a larger amount to commute to other transportation. There are some commuters who are not used of air conditioner and so they will have to adjust for it because there will be no longer jeepneys.
•Citizens will face a financial problem and poverty, the philippines's economy will decrease due to many jeepney drivers and operators have lost their source of income that they needed to support and provide for their family's need. Students and workers will be forced to pay a larger fare to commute and it will mostlikely bring an impact on their money and they may not get to their desired location on time. Jeepney phase out will just cause financial problem to many filipino citizens.
Finally, we should protect our traditional public vehicle transportation. Let us support our filipino jeepney drivers. Supporting them and protesting their rights are the least we could do to help our fellow filipino drivers and operators.
The jeepney is not just a mode of transport, it is a part of our culture and heritage. For decades, it has been serving the people of the Philippines and is considered the backbone of our public transportation system. While modernization is necessary, it should not completely eliminate jeepneys from our roads. Instead, we can make efforts to modernize them by adhering to the basic standards for a public transport vehicle that ensures the comfort of both drivers and commuters while still maintaining their classic look.
